There are international standards for plastic card sizes which are explained by the following formats - ID-1, ID-2, and ID-3. ID-1: 3.370 x 2.125 in (85.60 x 53.98 mm):
This is the most frequently used size for plastic cards as it is the typical for banking cards, credit cards, loyalty cards, gift cards, and is still used as the size for driver's licenses in several countries. This size is also referred to as just credit card size.
ID-2: 4.134 x 2.913 in (105 x 74mm):
This is a somewhat larger plastic card which gives the extra space for a clearly identifiable facial photograph but is still sufficient to fit in a wallet. This size is mostly used for ID cards.
ID-3: 4.921 x 2.913 in (125 x 88 mm):
This is the format used universal for passports and visas.
Other well-liked sizes are most usually used for plastic business cards. In the
USA, the size for plastic business cards is 3.5 x 2 in (89 x 51 mm), and in
Japan the size 3.582 x 2.165 in (91 x 55 mm) is intended for plastic business cards.
The toughness of plastic cards is one of the reasons consumers have a preference them over paper. This toughness is tied to the thickness of the plastic used to build the card. Plastic card thickness usually ranges from 10mil to 30mil. While it is probable to have plastic products made with thinner than 10mil and thicker than 30mil, the majority of plastic card printing companies offer plastic cards with thickness ranging between 10mil and 30mil. |
